Bilateral Speaking Reality Study

Japan spends an estimated 2.3 trillion yen every year on English education. That's more than almost any other country. Yet outcomes remain among the weakest in the developed world. Professionals can score high on written exams, but many still struggle to hold real conversations when it matters most.

This is more than an education issue. It's a national challenge that affects confidence, business growth, and international competitiveness. Despite decades of investment, the situation hasn't improved.

The Bilateral Speaking Reality Study was created to expose why. We are gathering voices from both sides:

  • Japanese professionals learning English: Why don't years of study and high TOEIC scores translate into confident speaking?
  • Non-Japanese learners studying Japanese: What keeps learners from turning lessons into natural, everyday speech?

By comparing these perspectives, we aim to uncover structural flaws in how speaking is taught, tested, and measured. The survey takes just 3 minutes. It's anonymous, and every response adds weight to research that could shape the future of language education. Join us. Together we can close the gap between effort and results.
